Kenya's Moment of Transformation

Our nation stands at a pivotal moment in history. While we face complex challenges in governance, economic inequality, environmental sustainability, and social cohesion, we also possess an incredible reservoir of talent, resilience, and innovative spirit waiting to be fully unleashed.

From the smallest village to the highest office, every Kenyan has both the power and duty to contribute to our collective progress.

"A nation's greatness is not measured by its economic power alone, but by the compassion and integrity of its people and their leaders."

The Great Kenyan Numbness: Why Are We Sleeping Through Our Own Wreckage?

By Step Forward KE Editorial Team October 26, 2023

We are a nation of incredible potential, famous for our long-distance running, our vibrant tech scene, our indomitable spirit. Yet, as we scroll through our timelines and watch the evening news, we are witnessing a different kind of race—a race to the bottom. And the most terrifying part? We are watching it from our beds, refusing to wake up.

Step Forward Kenya, it is time for a brutal conversation.

We have become a society anaesthetized by the routine of crisis. Every morning, we wake up, check our phones, sigh at the latest political drama, the latest revelation of corruption, the latest story of a family thrown into the streets, and we say, "Hii ni Kenya tu." (This is just Kenya).

But this is not just Kenya. This is a version of the country we are passively accepting, and in our silence, we are co-signing the lease.

Let's Look at the Wreckage:

We have a political class that treats public office not as a sacred trust, but as a lucrative investment. Every few months, a new scandal breaks—millions of shillings set ablaze, ghost workers on payrolls, procurement laws bent until they break. We hear the figures: billions lost. And what do we do? We make memes. We laugh about how "thieves" are running the show. We wait for the next "big" exposé, knowing full well that the "big men" will walk away with a handshake and a golden handshake.

We have a youth demographic that should be our greatest asset. The Gen Zs and Millennials are educated, connected, and creative. Yet, they are being offered a future built on the shaky foundation of "who you know." University graduates are forced to become vendors not by choice, but because the formal economy is a closed shop for those without a political godfather. The desperation is so thick you can cut it. And the sharks are circling, offering menial pay for monumental work, exploiting the hunger of a generation that is tired of waiting for a country that promised them nothing.

We have a social contract that is shredded. We pay taxes—and we should, for a functional society—but we look at our roads, our hospitals, our schools, and we see the money hasn't arrived. We see a system where the wealthy build private clinics and private schools because they can't trust the public systems they fund. The common man is left to queue for hours, praying for a service that is a right, not a privilege.

The "Wake Up" Call Isn't Just About Politics; It's About Us.

We love to blame "the government." And yes, they deserve the lion's share of the blame. But we must look in the mirror. The "wake up" call is also for us.

  • The Voter: Why do we sell our birthright for a kitu kidogo on election day? Why do we vote along tribal lines, electing a "son of the soil" who then proceeds to develop his own soil while the rest of the country becomes a desert? Why do we protect "our" corrupt leader because he is "ours," forgetting that his theft impoverishes us all?
  • The Bystander: Why do we see a matatu dropping a passenger in the middle of the highway and say nothing? Why do we watch someone throw garbage into a drain and walk away? Why do we accept poor service, bribery, and incompetence as the norm because "hio ndio kazi yao"?
  • The Digital Citizen: We have become experts at online outrage. We tweet, we post, we share angry videos. But when the phone screen goes black, the activism ends. We refuse to take that energy to the barazas, to the polling stations, to the streets in a peaceful, organized, and sustained manner.

The Alarm is Deafening. Can You Hear It?

The silence of the majority is the loudest sound in Kenya today. It tells the powerful that they can do whatever they want. It tells the corrupt that their billions are safe. It tells the hopeless that they are alone.

Step Forward Kenya, waking up is uncomfortable. It requires us to stop being spectators and start being players.

What Does Waking Up Look Like?

  1. Demanding Accountability, Not Just Posts: It means following the money. It means showing up at County Assemblies and Parliamentary hearings. It means using our constitutional right to petition and to access information. It means holding town halls and asking our leaders, "Where is the money for the road? Show us the books."
  2. Voting with Our Brains, Not Our Blood: It means researching candidates, not just their tribes. It means looking at their manifestos, their track records, and their integrity. It means refusing to be bought for 200 bob and a packet of flour. Our vote is our power; when we sell it, we become powerless.
  3. Reclaiming Our Agency: We cannot wait for the government to fix everything. It means building community solutions—neighborhood watches, community libraries, huduma centres that work because we demand they do. It means supporting local businesses that pay taxes and treat employees well.
  4. Breaking the Culture of Silence: It means calling out wrongdoing, whether it's a politician stealing or a neighbour breaking the law. It means refusing to participate in the corruption economy, even when it's the "easier" path.

The country is not going to save itself. The politicians will not suddenly find a conscience. The corruption will not magically disappear.

The only force that can turn this ship around is an awakened, angry, and organized citizenry. A citizenry that refuses to accept "Hii ni Kenya tu" as an excuse for failure.

The sun is up. The alarms are blaring.

Will you roll over and go back to sleep, or will you Step Forward?

Share this article. Talk about it. Let's make the noise so loud that even those in State House can't ignore it. The time to wake up was yesterday. The next best time is now.
